Farm to School Program

Picture
Red Lodge Area Food Partnership Council and Red Lodge Public Schools are happy to introduce our new Farm-to-School Coordinator, Kristen Hollum. Kristen will be following in the footsteps of the successful FoodCorps program and our first Farm-to-School Coordinator, Bridgett Stiegemeier. She will be spending time in the K-3 classrooms teaching hands on, nutrition based lessons to ensure local kids have the opportunity to build positive relationships with healthy food to fuel all aspects of the lives both now and in the future.

Specifically, each month, lessons will revolve around a ‘Harvest of the Month’ -a local, in-season item. Classrooms lessons will be coupled with a elementary school taste test of the Harvest of the Month, the food being incorporated into cafeteria meals, and information and recipes sent home to parents recapping what the students ate and how they can recreate it at home.
Kristen will also assist with:
  • It’s In The Bag! program, the free weekend meal program that provides kids with easy to prepare, healthy food on Fridays to ensure access nutritious meals throughout the weekend.
  • Maintaining the Youth Garden with volunteers and young gardeners to plant, tend, and harvest produce for the school cafeteria, farmers market, and other organizations.
  • General lessons, activities, and field trips throughout the year focused on local food.
  • Working with the Red Lodge Schools Wellness Committee to promote nutrition education among students, parents, educators, and administration.
